The Saddest Painting in Art History
In 1948, Andrew Wyeth was looking out the window of his summer home in Maine when he saw his neighbor Christina Olson crawling across the field near her house.
Christina was a woman who had suffered from polio since childhood, a disease that left her unable to walk. She refused to use a wheelchair, relying on her courage to crawl wherever she wanted to go.
With this painting titled "Christina’s World" (1948), Wyeth captured the reality of this woman. What might appear to be a simple American rural landscape is, in fact, one of the saddest stories in art… or is it the saddest of all?
