In ancient Babylon, there were markets where women were auctioned off as merchandise. In these auctions, the wealthiest men would bid on the most beautiful women to take them as their wives.
Edwin Long, an English painter, depicted this market, inspired by one of Herodotus' texts in which he spoke about this ancient custom. At that time, England was engaged in a struggle for women's rights, so when this painting was exhibited, it wasn’t well received by everyone... this painting revealed an uncomfortable truth.
