Communicating With Integrity | Pastor Mel Svendsen

Bottom Line:
Believers are to communicate at all times with integrity and reject any tendency in our lives to deceive, manipulate, or purposefully say one thing and mean another. This is essential in being a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, who is the Truth.

Context of this passage:
“God resists the proud” (4:6)
-humility in relationships (4:1-12);
-humility with regard to the future (4:13-17);
-humility as we patiently wait for Jesus' future coming (5:1-11).

1. Be committed to truthful communication. James 5:12; Matthew 5:33-37; James 4:8
“James wants to highlight this prohibition—because he sees it as getting at the ultimate issue of personal integrity.”

By making false or non-binding oaths, they were essentially using the things of God as a means of disguising a lie! They were missing the whole point of God's command to not swear falsely, profaining the name of the Lord and taking His name in vain (Matt. 23:16-22).

2. Stop making frivolous, non-binding, or false oaths. James 5:12; Matthew 23:16-22
By making false or non-binding oaths, people of Jesus' day were essentially using the things of God as a means to disguise a lie for the sole purpose of personal benefit!

3. Remember that deceptive, manipulative communication will be judged (disciplined) by God. James 5:10-12; Ephesians 4:15
As His followers, Jesus is calling us to be people of the truth - people who say what we mean and mean what we say with a commitment to always speak that truth in love.
