This story is about the author's experience as a volunteer on the San Bernardo archipelago, a group of islands located two hours by motorboat from Cartagena. The archipelago is known for its beautiful coral reefs, mangroves, and white sandy beaches on tiny nameless islands. The author worked at the "Isla Roots" hostel on one of these islands, where the atmosphere was an endless Caribbean party.
His responsibilities included meeting guests, serving drinks at the bar, and organizing excursions, all while communicating in multiple languages. Despite the lively party atmosphere, he found moments of warmth and unforgettable experiences, including night plankton tours where the sea came alive with bioluminescent plankton, creating a magical and surreal underwater world.
As an introvert, he felt a bit uncomfortable at times but decided to move to Palma Island, where he worked at the "Mystica" hostel. There, he handled reception duties, booked rooms, and helped maintain the beach. The author embraced the laid-back Caribbean lifestyle, sleeping in a hammock under a palm tree and learning the secret to comfortable hammock lounging.
Palma Island also had a unique history, as it was previously home to a large five-star hotel called "Decameron," complete with its own zoo. When the hotel went bankrupt, the animals were left to roam freely on the island, creating a surreal experience for the author and other residents. He encountered a variety of animals, from monkeys and macaws to iguanas and deer. The island even had a pool with a seemingly harmless shark, which both tourists and locals would jump into, despite the warning signs.
The author's volunteer experience on these Caribbean islands provided him with an unforgettable adventure, three meals a day, free drinks, and unlimited access to excursions—an idyllic and dream-like job for a month.
