When I came back to Sheffield in 2016, desperate to make films, I knew that I wanted my own little studio.
So, I spent the last of my money getting a beat up room in a decaying old building called Waverley House. The place needed a little work.
The windows leaked. It was directly adjacent to a boxing gym. I think 75% of the city knew the door code. But, together with a few friends, I made a space that proved to be the perfect backdrop for my work.
During my first week in the building I was greeted with a rock through my window. I’ve still got the rock - it’s a good luck charm. I loved that little room. It’s where I made my first successful films and really developed my style of filmmaking.
There are these dividers in our lives. Before and afters. Who we were and who we go on to be. This run down little room is one of my dividers. It’s the first time I felt like a real filmmaker.
I’ve moved around a little since 2016 but nowhere has inspired me the way my first studio did.
