In ancient Israel, seven principal judges emerged as leaders during times of crisis, guiding their people with wisdom and bravery. Othniel, the first judge, delivered Israel from Mesopotamian oppression, restoring peace for 40 years. Ehud followed, ingeniously freeing Israel from Moabite rule with a daring assassination. Deborah, a prophetess and the only female judge, alongside Barak, triumphed over the Canaanites, as celebrated in the Song of Deborah. Gideon, with just 300 men, miraculously defeated the Midianites, while Jephthah negotiated and fought to protect Israel from the Ammonites. Samson, the last of these judges, was renowned for his Herculean strength, which he used against the Philistines, ultimately sacrificing himself for his people’s liberation. These judges, each unique in their leadership, collectively played a pivotal role in the turbulent yet formative era of Israelite history.
