The Parable of the Good Samaritan
A Bible reading of the Parable of the Good Samaritan; a story Jesus used as a lesson of compassion that can be found in Luke 10:25-37. It's about a man who is robbed, beaten, and left for dead on the road. Two people, a priest and a Levite, pass by without helping him. However, a Samaritan, who was considered an outsider and enemy by the Jewish people, stops and helps the man. He bandages his wounds, puts him on his own donkey, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care.
This parable is Jesus' answer to what it means to love God and love people (the first and second greatest commandments). It redefines the concept of "neighbor" to include anyone, not just those who are geographically near you or people you give preference to. The Good Samaritan is a picture of the type of unconditional, non-favoritism, and non self-seeking love and compassion that followers of Jesus should represent.
