Open the Instagram app and swipe left or tap the paper airplane icon in the top right corner to access your message inbox, also known as Instagram Direct.
Navigate to the chat where you think you might find the old message. You can browse your chats list or use the search bar at the top of the inbox to find a specific conversation.
Tap on the name of the person or group at the top of the chat screen. This will open their chat profile.
Select "Search in chat" from the menu that appears. This option might also be worded as "Search messages" depending on your Instagram version.
Type your search term in the box at the top of the screen. This could be a keyword you remember from the message, or the name of a person mentioned in the message.
Tap "Search." Instagram will then filter the chat history and display all messages containing your search term.
