On May 17, 2004, three of the couples who were plaintiffs in the Goodridge v. Department of Public Health case, which solidified marriage equality in Massachusetts, lined up at City Hall to get their marriage licenses. As Massachusetts approaches the 20th anniversary of this historic moment, a look at the landscape of Black and queer spaces across the state paints a picture of activism and resiliency. Basic Black host Tanisha Sullivan, Esq., President NAACP Boston, spoke with:
Rev. Irene Monroe, speaker, LGBTQ+ activist, public theologian and co-host of, “The Revs” on GBH Boston Public Radio, and the podcast, “All Rev’d Up.”
Corey Yarbrough, an LGBTQ+ Advocate and the Executive Director of 826 Boston, an organization supporting K-12 students and beyond to share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life. He was also the Executive Director of the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition, an organization he co-founded with his husband, Quincey Roberts, Sr. from 2009-2016.
Shaplaie Brooks, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ+ Youth.
Justice Roe Williams, board member with the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition. He is also a body positive activist with Fitness 4 All Bodies, and the co-editor of the book, “Deconstructing the Fitness Industrial Complex: How to Resist, Disrupt, and Reclaim What it Means to be Fit in American Culture.”
