This is one of the most tragic, sickening incidents to happen in Japanese wrestling during the modern era. It left a man close to death and unable to wrestle for the rest of his life, and it isn’t talked about all that much.

It happened in All Japan Pro Wrestling May 29, 2011.

A veteran mid card wrestler named Nobukazu Hirai collapsed backstage after a match. He was vomiting blood and slipped into a coma. But it wasn’t from wrestling.

Prior to that match, Hirai was assaulted and beaten backstage by a wrestler named Yoshikazu Taru. The reason for the attack isn’t explicitly known, but apparently it started as either a business disagreement or a criticism of Hirai’s work and alleged alcoholism. The two were stable mates in a faction called Voodoo Murderers and believe or not, Taru accompanied Hirai to the ring after assaulting him.

Hirai was 41 years old at the time, and suffered a subdural hematoma. He needed brain surgery to survive, which thankfully, he did.

It was mainstream news in Japan, and AJPW president Keiji Muto was heavily criticized for both allowing Hirai to wrestle after the assault and for not immediately making the details known to the public. Less than a month later he resigned his executive position at All Japan.

There were witnesses to the assault who did nothing to stop it, and everyone involved was eventually suspended from the promotion.
