On 28 September 1966, ITN's Peter Woods observed officers in the New York Police Department (NYPD) undergoing firearms training, as part of an investigation into the difference between British and American policing. In general, officers in the United States were baffled by the fact that British "bobbies" patrolled the streets unarmed. In New York, it was assumed that most members of the public would be armed in any interaction with law enforcement, however routine. Therefore all officers, male and female, were required to carry their firearms at all times – even when off duty.
