If you ask Dr. Gabor Maté, there's no such thing as an “addictive personality”. Nor is addiction a “disease” as such. Instead, Dr. Mate teaches that addiction originates in a person's need to solve a problem: a deep-seated problem, often from our earliest years, that has more to do with trauma than weakness or lack of willpower.
Gabor Maté is a Canadian physician and author. He has a background in family practice and a special interest in childhood development, trauma and potential lifelong impacts on physical and mental health including autoimmune disease, cancer, ADHD, addictions, and a wide range of other conditions.
