Rain water harvesting in dry areas with our Tanzania partner The Lead Foundation. Here we learn about how our on the ground partner The Lead Foundation, together with the indigenous Maasai community, are focused on rainwater harvesting. In order to restore and retain water, bands are dug to ensure that grass can grow. This grass is essential to the farmers in this area, as it provides grazing for their livestock.
This work is being done in the Monduli district located in the Arusha Region of Tanzania, which has received very little rainfall recently. The waterbands dug by the community have collected rainwater and are able to hold it for some time. The retention of this water adds moisture to the soil, which benefits soil health. The Lead Foundation is working to educate people on the science and technical work of rainwater harvesting, while also creating awareness for how to overcome these and other challenges of climate change.
