A while ago I recorded a video demonstrating one way to misalign a cuckoo clock's musical movement:    • Before and after aligning a cuckoo's ...

This video shows another aspect of aligning the metal comb of a cuckoo clock's musical movement. The comb, in addition to being left-right aligned to the pins on the barrel, and being parallel to the barrel, must also be just the right distance from the barrel.

I discovered after cleaning and reassembling this musical movement that it made a terrible buzzing sound when it played. This buzzing was caused by a pin touching a comb's tooth that was still vibrating from being plucked a moment before.

The problem was that the comb was too close to the barrel. In addition to causing the terrible buzzing noise, that distance error caused the movement to play too loudly and to require too heavy a weight to make it run.

Once I had moved the comb to the proper distance from the barrel, the pins lightly plucked the teeth, eliminating the buzz. As a happy side effect, the weight required to run the music dropped by over 100 grams.
