A PhD is a Marathon rather than a Sprint! It takes a few good years before you manage to fully develop the idea and prove something novel!
Sometimes it looks like you are in a tunnel, alone, and you cannot see the end of it….Anxiety is very common for those PhD students who are trying hard, trying alone, and with limited guidance.
Do NOT get discouraged.
1. Work smart, and ASK your peers for support.
Especially, all of you who are not working within a large group of researchers supervised by the same academic may be feeling ISOLATED!
2. You are not going to solve all problems in a day!
Be well organised and methodical and attempt to take the PhD step-by-step. Assign some milestones and make sure you celebrate each time you successfully achieved one.
3. Be prepared for unforeseen events!
Always allow for a contingency plan (some extra time), just in case things do not work well. And if they do not appear, well you have some extra time to either shorten the time of the PhD, or to celebrate!
4. Talk to the PGR office and seek for resources and support where and when is needed.
There is plethora of options and resources to help you get on with your PhD. Remember, a PhD is not just a project. You need to become a person who can find solutions to the most difficult problems. You need to answer difficult questions that no one has answered before and you need to learn to explain these in a very academic (high level) way. Things like this, will reward you with a life-time Doctor title!
5. Complete your PhD in 3-4 years.
Make sure that you are on the game from Day1 and thus you manage to complete the PhD in good time! I have seen very good PhDs from excellent researchers completing their PhDs after 5+ years of studies. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you are still interested and focus…although it is understandable to lose interest after that long period. If there was not a particular reason for extending your studies (such as health- family- finance- issues etc.) then complete it in time. There is plenty of time to keep working on it afterwards, publish papers and even supervise other students to work on it.
One more thing, we live in the era of information, mass data and digitalisation.
There are plenty of ways to find alternative resources… there are numerous online free access software that you can use to develop high quality drawings, sketches, graphs, videos for your presentations etc. I would suggest to use such things so that you can boost your work and ultimately its impact to the society.
To summarise:
-Be prepared for the worse.
-Create a network of researchers who can help each other and boost your productivity.
-Search for tools and available resources to flourish your research
…and most of all…do not forget to enjoy your PhD! Remember, it is not only the destination that matters, but equally the trip does!
My next video will be on how to prepare for academic presentations.
