Natalia Goncharova: A Woman of the Avante-Garde at Palazzo Strozzi
Running until January 12, 2020, Palazzo Strozzi’s autumn exhibition is dedicated to Natalia Goncharova: A Woman of the Avant-Garde with Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso, covering the extraordinary career of the Russian artist, who was born in 1881 in the Tula Oblast. Goncharova moved to Moscow in 1892, where she remained until 1914, when she moved to Paris. In Moscow, the artist joined the growing arts scene, working with artists like Pyotr Konchalovsky, Pavel Trubetskoi and her lifelong partner Mikhail Larionov, all of whom were among those who displayed their works in the groundbreaking Jack of Diamonds exhibition held in 1910, which showcased the shift in Russian towards a more radical, Modernist style.
Throughout her career, Goncharova interacted with several exponents of the leading art movements in Europe. The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi highlights these exchanges through a vast display of over 130 artworks by some of these artists, including, as the title suggests, Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso, as well as Italian Futurists like Boccioni and Giacomo Balla. Thanks to her prolific and multi-faceted talents, Goncharova’s repertoire ranges from paintings to theatre sets, illustrations to performance art, all of which can be explored in the exhibition. These include her costumes and set designs for the Ballet Russes, a key part of her decades-long career.
