What to Do If You *Insist* On Charging Credit Card Fees
Y’all! Stop charging credit card fees!
I get they’re annoying and add up, but it’s better to pay that 3% than to have customers feel like you’re nickel and diming them.
But if you insist, here’s a better way to approach it:
❌ “Your total is $56.23. Oh, you’re paying with a credit card? That’ll be $57.92 with our 3% credit card fee.”
✅ “Your total is $57.92, but we offer a 3% discount if you pay cash.”
⚠️ THE EXCEPTION ⚠️
After posting my reel on why not to charge credit card fees, one of my clients mentioned that their average sale is tens of thousands of dollars hence why they charge the fee.
Their business is the type that invoices so it’s normal for most people to pay by check.
Their customers know how much they owe before their project is complete or they likely have a Net 30 payment term (30 days to pay) which is why it makes sense to prepare a check.
In this case, since the business would lose a significant amount to credit card fees and they invoice, meaning they’re willing/it’s normal to wait for a check, I can understand charging a credit card fee.
