Welcome back to part two of our deep dive into the history of the Space Wolves. In this chapter, we delve into the era when the Emperor of Mankind first set foot on the icy, unforgiving world of Fenris to find the lost son who would become his most savage weapon—Leman Russ. Discovered amidst the snow and storms, Russ was already a legend among the tribes of Fenris, a colossal warrior who led his people with a mix of ferocity and wisdom. Recognizing his unmatched martial prowess and indomitable spirit, the Emperor proclaimed him the Primarch of the VIth Legion—the Space Wolves.
Under Russ's leadership, the Space Wolves were transformed from a legion of brutal warriors into a highly disciplined force that retained its savage edge. They became the Emperor's chosen executioners, used to bring swift and brutal compliance to worlds resistant to Imperial rule. The VIth Legion quickly gained a fearsome reputation for its methods, often choosing to shatter rebellions through direct, overwhelming force. They were the howling wolves in the night, bringing terror to the foes of the Imperium and swift justice to traitors and heretics.
As the Great Crusade continued, the Space Wolves crossed paths with many of their brother legions, earning both respect and caution. They were seen as the ultimate sanction, the ones the Emperor would send when all else had failed. It was during this time that Russ formed both friendships and rivalries with his brother Primarchs, most notably with Horus, the Warmaster, and Magnus the Red, whose fate would become forever entwined with the Space Wolves. As the Horus Heresy erupted, Russ and the Space Wolves found themselves caught in a galaxy-spanning civil war, pitted against former brothers now turned traitor. The betrayal of Horus tested the Space Wolves' resolve like never before. They faced overwhelming odds, from the brutal Siege of Terra to the desperate battles fought across the stars as they sought to hold the line against the forces of Chaos. Russ, ever the warrior and leader, was relentless in his pursuit of vengeance against the traitor legions, especially the Thousand Sons and their daemonic Primarch, Magnus.
