The Accord is all-new for its 11-generation. Honda is keeping us busy and we love it. So, let’s dive into this enduring favorite.
The very first Accord was a two-door hatchback, but not so much anymore. Others in the Accords current category, or what’s left of it, include the Toyota Camry, Kia K5, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima and even the Chevy Malibu just for this model year.
The Accord comes in both gas and hybrid powered models. The lower LX and EX trims get their grunt from a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 192 hp and 192 lb-ft torque.
While the Sport, EX-L, Sport-L and Touring have a two-motor hybrid set up paired to a 2.0-liter Atkinson engine. (204 total hp; 247 total lb-ft torque) That hybrid is more powerful than the outgoing model
Kudos to that hybrid set up because the Accord gets decent zip in the acceleration department and feels more responsive than the previous hybrid. But the unfortunate news here is that Honda’s walked away from the 2-liter turbo which at 252 horsepower was a great option for those seeking something sportier. This hybrid doesn’t come close enough for me.
There are four drive mode one of those is new, it’s an Individual mode that you can customize yourself when it comes to throttle response, steering feel and other parameters.
The cabin feels blissfully quiet. Almost to premium car standards and the visibility looks good, though thanks to that raked roof and high rear window rear visibility can be challenging.
The global architecture the Accord rides on gets stiffer and the suspension is more responsive. Those adjustments have made what is frankly the best affordably prices midsize sedan even better. The Accord feels super solid on the road. This one is no different.
The seats are also reworked and feel both supportive and comfortable. I could hit up a road trim in this one. But one caution they might feel a bit on the narrower side to someone bigger than I am.
Looking at fuel economy the numbers come in where I’d expect them to. (1.5L Turbo: 29 city/37 hwy; 2.0L Hybrid: EX-L 51 city/44 hwy; All other trims: 46 city/41 hwy). That 51 mile number on the EX-L trim hybrid looks impressive. Gas mileage is another reason to really love a sedan, guys.
I think this is the best looking Accord yet. It’s got that longer hood look, thinner a-pillars like the Civic got, a strong and defined character line just at the belt and an upright grill which I think looks proportionally excellent. It’s elegant and grown up. It’s also 2.7-inch longer and has a wider rear track. Not sure I’m crazy about cars getting bigger and bigger but we know what that ultimately means.
Since we’re in here, the interior does a great job same as the Civic. It’s simple, yes, but it’s got this honeycomb pattern to give it visual interest. It’s not boring but lays down some sporty vibes. There’s some style. Who doesn’t want a little style!
The Touring trim gets Google built in which helps you make commands and gives you seamless navigation as well as a 12-speaker Bose audio system and wireless charging.
Honda’s suite of safety features, Honda Sensing, gets more goodies that come standard across the board and include features including forward collision warnings, a road departure mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist.
Pricing on the Accord starts around $27,300 for the LX not including destination ($1,095 destination charge). With the safety features, smart entry and remote start, that gauge cluster and almost 200 horsepower, that’s a lot of car for a good price.
It’s already in dealers, so you can already check out for yourself the snazzy new styling, the increased interior space, upgraded safety features and improved driving dynamics for yourself.
