Mitsubishi released their newest generation of the Outlander for 2022 with no Plug-in Hybrid option. Well, They didn’t forget about it. Their 3-row compact SUV now has an upgraded PHEV system from the last generation with a larger 20 kWh battery supplying power to one electric motor in front and one in the rear. The naturally aspirated 2.4 L engine can supply power to the front wheels in certain circumstances but it mainly acts as a generator for the battery, making a combined output of (248 hp / 332 lb-ft)

I really like how smooth the transition is between the gas engine and electric motors. And there are drive modes to help cater to your driving style. When you put your foot down the power is adequate, it may take a while to get up to speed but when it does, it feels like it’s just enough to get around but the power is there and very usable.

Mitsubishi boasts that their larger battery will provide as much as 38 miles of pure electric range, and if you’re in a hurry the Outlander PHEV has fast-charge capabilities bringing the battery from 0-80 percent in roughly 30 minutes. However, that option is only available on the highest trim. Fuel economy comes in at 64 MPGe with which is actually less than the outgoing model, but with the help of an expanded gas tank on this new generation, the Outlander PHEV can achieve over 400 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas

The system decides what’s the most efficient way to distribute power, and if you’d like to decide for yourself, hit the EV button and you can choose normal, EV, Save, and charge.

You can also decide regen-braking with these paddle shifters, there’s also Mitsubishi’s “innovative pedal” which is almost like a one-pedal driving mode which let’s you creep.

The drive modes also help to customize the driving feel of the Outlander. For less than ideal road conditions, there’s gravel, tarmac, mud, and snow. And for personal driving styles there’s Normal, Eco, and power.

I really like how you can tell the difference in the drive modes…

Since the last generation, the Outlander gets longer, wider, and taller. Being on the larger side of the compact SUV segment, it surely doesn’t drive like it. Mitsubishi not only wanted to give it a brawnier look, but also the driving dynamics to back that up. From wet roads to windy streets, the Outlander carries its size well.

The steering in the outlander feels good, and responsive. Even transitioning from gravel to pavement it soaks up well. The brakes have a squishy feel but it can come to a smooth stop. Then you can accelerate but notice how it takes a beat to get up to speed.

The Outlander’s road manners are complimented by its interior. The cabin is quiet thanks to sound insulating material on the front windows and windshield, soft touch points where you need them, and a panoramic sunroof. There’s a standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and 9 inch infotainment screen with apple CarPlay and android auto. First and second row have plenty of space with comfortable seats. But the standard 3rd row… yeah let’s leave that for the kiddos. However, when not in use, the 3rd row has a fun way to fold down flat giving you some decent cargo room.

While hugging roads in the Outlander PHEV, you’ll have a list of active safety systems in place which includes 7 airbags, blind spot warning with assist, lane departure prevention, rear cross traffic alert with emergency braking, predictive forward collision warning, and MI-Pilot adaptive cruise control with lane keep assist.

I think the adaptive cruise control works great and comes to a nice smooth stop, and one of my favorite features is when you’re adaptive cruising if you’re coming up to a curve too fast, it’ll slow the outlander down.

The plug-in hybrid compact SUV segment is growing, but few competitors offer a 3 row option. Kia offers the Sorento with a plug-in hybrid powertrain but can only be had with seating for 6.

The Outlander PHEV will be available sometime in late November of 2022. Pricing will start at $39,845 not including destination charges and will top out around $50k for a fully loaded trim.

If you’re looking for a compact SUV with 3-rows, plug-in capability, a nice interior and good safety tech, you might want to check out the Outlander PHEV when it comes out. But when you do, throw it into a corner.
