The error can cause unexpected behavior with Credential Guard, a feature that uses virtualization-based security to isolate and protect your credentials from malware and other threats.
There are different ways to fix this error and restore the normal functionality of Credential Guard. Here are some of them:
- Check the RunAsPPL registry key. This key controls whether the LSA process runs as a protected process light (PPL), which enhances its security and integrity. To check this key, follow these steps¹:
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
- Navigate to the following location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Lsa
- Look for a DWORD value named RunAsPPL on the right pane. If it does not exist, create it by right-clicking on an empty space and selecting New - DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Double-click on RunAsPPL and set its value data to 1 or 2 depending on your Windows version. For Windows 11 22H2, you can use either value. For earlier versions of Windows, you need to use 1 if your device supports UEFI Secure Boot, or 2 if it does not.
- Restart your PC and check if the error is resolved.
- Turn off Credential Guard. If you don't need Credential Guard or if it is causing problems on your PC, you can try to turn it off and see if that fixes the error. To turn off Credential Guard, follow these steps²:
- Open the Group Policy Editor by typing gpedit.msc in the Run dialog box and pressing Enter.
- Navigate to the following location: Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System - Device Guard
