Quickly Delete Extra Lines in a Text Document with Google Sheets

Hi, everyone! This is Lara Hammock from the Marble Jar channel and in today’s video I’ll share my super quick tip on getting rid of blank lines in a text document on an iPad or PC.
Have you ever cut and pasted something into an email or an Evernote memo or even a Pages document on your iPad and found that it was formatted with blank lines between each bullet or each line? Sometimes it is easy to go in and delete each blank line, but sometimes you are pasting in hundreds of lines and that process would take you forever.
On my PC, my go-to fix for this was to paste the whole mess into Word and use Find and Replace to find to two paragraph returns together and replace them with just one paragraph return. You had to go into special characters in order to make it happen, but it would do the trick. On the iPad, the Pages app doesn’t have this option, so here’s my solution.
Select and copy the whole passage. Then paste this into a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets. This solution has the added benefit of stripping all of your formating out. Now in order to preserve the original order, let’s number each row sequentially. To do this, number the first row 1 and then second row 2, then select those two rows and all of the other cells in the column down to the end of the text and choose Autofill. Magic. Okay — now select the column with the text and choose Sort A-Z. All of the blank lines will sort to the bottom where you can just select and delete them in a chunk. Now, to get them back in the original order, select the order column and Sort A-Z. Now, you can select just the column containing text and paste it back into whatever document you are working on. It shouldn’t bring the spreadsheet table formating with it, but if it does, you can always use the Plain Text app to remove all formatting.
And that’s it! I find this easier even than having to launch Microsoft Word, so I now use this at my PC also. Let me know what you think! Comments are always appreciated and thanks for watching!
