How a 19 Year-Old Refugee Became an Animator on Pharrell’s New LEGO Movie Piece by Piece
Dozens of Tongal Creators around the world united to help develop, animate, and market Piece by Piece, Pharrell Williams' life story told in LEGO animation.
The movie is an uplifting story of what can happen when talent meets opportunity — and there were also many stories that mirrored that message among the Tongal animators who worked behind-the-scenes.
One of the Tongal artists who worked on the film, Amir Qurbani, is a 19-year-old refugee who was forced to flee Iran for Indonesia aged nine.
Inspired by his love of LEGO, he taught himself animation online, and is now finding work on the Tongal platform as he uses his talent to begin to build a better life for himself and his family.
He designed 400 characters for the biopic as we brought Pharrell's world to life in LEGO, and even designed the animated version of the Louis Vuitton camouflage suit that the superstar's minifigure wears in the movie's poster. Amir's story was recently covered by TIME Magazine.
Piece by Piece was co-produced by Tongal alongside Focus Features, i am OTHER, the LEGO Group, Tremolo Productions, and Pure Imagination Studios. It's the first time a theatrical movie has been made in collaboration with a creator platform.
