Description:
A battery is a device consisting of one or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy.
Electrochemical Cell:
An electrochemical cell in which spontaneous chemical reaction produces
a flow of electrons.
In other words,
An electrochemical cell is a device that converts chemical energy into
electrical energy.
An electrochemical cell includes:
• Two Electrodes: (Anode and Cathode)
• Electrolytes
• A Semi Permeable Barrier.
Construction of an Electrochemical cell:
In a cell container, two electrodes (Cathode and Anode) immersed in solutions of their respective divalent ions.
Anode:
• Zinc (Zn) act as the negative electrode or anode.
• Zn atoms lose electrons to form Zn²⁺ ions (which go into solution).
Cathode:
• The copper (Cu) serves as the positive electrode or cathode.
• Cu²⁺ ions of the CuSO₄ solution take up these electrons to form Cu atoms.
These two electrodes are connected by wire through which electrons can flow.
Electrolyte:
An electrolyte is a liquid or paste that conducts electricity because it contains chemicals that
form ions.
Such as ZnSO₄ and CuSO₄ solution.
• Zn electrode is dipped in the ZnSO₄ solution.
• Cu electrode is dipped in the CuSO₄ solution.
Semi Permeable Barrier:
A semi permeable barrier is placed between two electrolyte solutions.
This barrier also allows the ions in both electrolyte solutions to move from one side to the other to prevent charge from building up on the electrodes.
Zinc-Carbon BATTERY:
A Zinc-Carbon battery is made up of various components, such as
• Bottom Cap
• Cathode
• Anode
• Carbon Rod
• Electrolyte
• Separator
• Metal Cap etc.
Why Electrons flow from the anode to the cathode?
• The Zn atoms on the surface of the Zn container lose two electrons (2e⁻) to become Zn²⁺ ions.
• These free electrons inserted into the cathode paste (MnO₂+ C).
• As a result, the two electrodes have different charges.
• The anode becomes negatively charged as electrons are released.
• The cathode becomes positively charged as electrons are consumed.
• This difference in charge causes the electrons to want to move toward the positively charged cathode.
Cathode: 2MnO₂ (s) + H₂(g) = Mn₂O₃ (s) + H₂O (l)
Anode: Zn(s) -2e = Zn²⁺(aq)
