Most visitors to South Africa will want to visit at least one of the country's protected wilderness areas, so they can experience, first-hand, the wonder of nature in an untamed environment.
KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
The world famous Kruger National Park was established in 1898 by Paul Kruger, and borders with Mozambique.
It is located to the eastern side of the Northern Province running southwards into the Eastern Lowveld of Mpumalanga, covering an area of two million hectares. As the Kruger National Park is so huge (about 350km from North to South) it would be very difficult to see it all in one trip. The Southern section of the Kruger National Park is the most popular and has the richest diversity of habitats and animal life.
The park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Home to a wealth of animals, including 147 species of mammals, including the "Big 5", 500 species of bird and 33 types of amphibian. All the big animals can be found here including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, hippo, giraffe, rhino and buffalo. The flora is equally diverse with over 300 different types of trees.
HLUHLUWE-IMFOLOZI PARK
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is the oldest game reserve in South Africa situated approximated 270 kms north of Durban in central Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal. It covers an area of 960 km² (96,000 ha).
The Park was originally formed for the sole purpose of saving the Rhino and it is now home Africa's 'Big Five' (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros) as well as other wildlife including the elusive Cheetah, Wild Dog and Nyala.
Many hides, which overlook pans and waterholes, have been set up which provides visitors with excellent opportunities to see the wildlife at close range.
ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK
The Addo Elephant Park is located in the Eastern Cape Province approximately 70km north of Port Elizabeth near the Zuurberg Range in the Sundays River valley.
The park was originally established in 1931 to protect the huge herds of elephants that once roamed the area. Over the years that park region has been extended and it is now the third largest national park in South Africa.
It is home to over 550 elephants, lions, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, a variety of antelope and zebra species, as well as the unique Addo flightless dung beetle found almost exclusively in Addo.
Addo is malaria free which makes it a good alternative to the Kruger National Park for those travelling with children.
The road conditions within the park are in good order, making it an ideal national park to self-drive around.
MLILWANE WILDLIFE SANTCTUARY
Located in eSwatini near Lobamba, between Manzini and Mbabane and easily accessible from Ezulwini and Malkerns. Mlilwane is a private reserve and is the oldest (established in the 1950's) and most visited of Swazi parks.
Animals that can be found in this park include zebra, giraffe, many different antelope, crocodile, hippo and a variety of birdlife. Walking, cycling and horse riding is permitted in the reserve and there are many vehicle and walking trails.
