Jeep Grand Cherokee burnt oil smell fix - how to replace oil cooler/oil filter housing - oil leak
I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland (WK2) and I started smelling a weird "burnt oil" smell in the cab. Usually I would smell this if I had the heat on. Also if I was driving on the highway and then came off the highway and stopped at a street light I would smell it very strong. The weird thing is that there wasn't any oil drips below the car. I looked all around the engine and couldn't find any oil leaks. I did some research on the Pentastar 3.6L V6, which is what is inside my Jeep, and discovered that it has a common failure point, the oil cooler. When the oil cooler starts to leak, it pools up in the engine and when the engine gets hot can cause a burnt oil smell. I also noticed that my Jeep was burning oil. I was checking the oil level and periodically I was having to add more oil to top it off. Which I've never had to do before. When I looked down in the engine I could finally see that the oil cooler was leaking and was causing my loss of oil as well as the bad smell. I made a video of the step by step instructions of what you have to do to replace the oil cooler. Below is the list of parts and tools that you will need to do this job. This job is labor intensive, but it's not hard. Just a lot of screws to unscrew and some awkward positions you have to contort yourself in order to reach some of them.
