Are you looking for a convenient way of lock and unlock your e-scooter? Are you concerned about how your device is aging?
Let's take the opportunity to talk about asset tracking and monitoring solutions based on ST technologies, grouped in a combination of ST products, called Smartag2.
 The smartag2 is an NFC sensors tag development kit, designed with in mind long battery life and cost-effectiveness.Â
The goal is to continuously monitor the status of the asset, an e-scooter in this case, and if it’s been lock or unlock by a user, moved or tampered with.
This solution runs on an STM32L4 ultra low power that can be powered by a standard coin cell battery or by the e-scooter battery itself.
This microcontroller is connected to a ST25 Dynamic NFC Tag, a secure microcontroller STSAFE and multiple environmental and motion MEMS sensors.
The Dynamic NFC tag allows to easily read and write data to the microcontroller using a simple NFC-enabled phone.
Let me show you how it works.
Firstly, I need to add my new device on my account on the dedicated mobile app, to ensure that no one else can use my e-scooter.Â
Then once authenticated, I'll be the only one able to securely unlock the e-scooter thanks to the ST25 dynamic NFC tag and a STSAFE secure micro available on onboard.Â
Now I can configure the list of parameters I would like to monitor, and approaching my phone to the smartag2, it turns from red to green to indicate that it’s unlocked.Â
At this time, the phone writes data in the NFC tag memory that will be read by the microcontroller afterwards.
Then the NFC tag is continuously monitoring the e-scooter status parameters, such as orientation or shaken, and record them in its memory.
For instance, if the e-scooter falls down, the light turns yellow to show the event, that is logged in the NFC tag memory.
At any time, I can read these data using my mobile phone, whatever if the e-scooter is locked or unlocked.
To sum things up, I used a ST25DV-I2C is a dynamic NFC tag, that allows to read and write data dynamically and quickly thanks the Fast Transfer Mode feature. This NFC dynamic tag embeds up to 64Kbits for recording a large amount of data and has many other capabilities such as Energy harvesting. This is an NFC Type 5 tag, with an optimized reading distance for the end user.
The smartag2 is an end-to-end proof of concept solutions for asset tracking, available on st.com, including HW and FW in source code, mobile app for Android and iOS. A web-based dashboard is also available to monitor your asset, like on the mobile app.
