Updated Models for the Nightmares - Model Showcase (Five Nights at Freddy's)
I normally wouldn't have bothered giving these models their own showcase animation, because they don't have much to offer in the way of interesting gimmicks to make them worth showing off. But, I poured weeks of mind-numbing work into these things (you would not believe how tedious it is to manually carve up the gashes in the outer suit), and it turned out, you barely even see them in the animation I made them for. I just couldn't stomach that much wasted effort, so here I am, trying to peddle a handful of minor modeling tweaks as grounds for making such a song and dance over nearly untouched designs.
This is, though, a good chance to highlight some nuances of animation which I have more to say about. For the way the Nightmares move, I made an effort to avoid that 'bounciness' that is the expected standard for FNaF animatronics. The reason for this is, at the end of the day, they're not animatronics, are they? The Nightmares are just monsters, wearing the likeness of the animatronics from Freddy's. As far as I'm concerned, the robotic skeleton on the inside is just a vestigial carry-over from the real animatronics that inspired these dreams. I tried to convey that by having them move more organically than usual in my animations.
That's not to say lifelike, though: Freddy in particular is animated like a propped-up corpse, the most living part of him being the Freddles. The Freddles themselves move at 12 frames per second, to look like stop-motion animation. But, having the nightmares move so softly and fluidly meant that for the sound, I needed to come up with something other than my usual library of curt mechanical clunks. Instead, The main slow scraping noise they make is the sound of a dial being turned on an old camera. The breathing/growling sound made by Bonnie and Chica is a reused recording originally created for Ennard in a previous video.
