How To Enable VRR + Local Dimming Tutorial | Hisense U8G/U88G/U7G/U78G | M0422 Update
Today I answer one of my most frequently asked questions about the Hisense U8G/U88G/U7G/U78G, which is "How To Enable VRR and Local Dimming" on these TVs!
Now I want to start off by saying that I am running a currently unreleased software version on my Hisense U88G; however, this update will be hitting the masses very shortly via an OTA update for the Hisense U8G, U88G, U7G, and U78G. Using these steps, I was also able to get variable refresh rate working while using local dimming across most previous software build, both public and beta.
First, it's important to understand what VRR or Variable Refresh Rate is, as well as its various types. VRR allows your television to match frame rate dips from our output device in order to reduce or eliminate screen tearing or artifacts while playing games or high refresh rate content. As for types, there is HDMI level VRR, Freesync, and G-Sync. All 3 do more or less the same thing; however, both Freesync and G-Sync are software-enabled variants from both AMD and Nvidia, whereas HDMI level VRR is a feature built into HDMI 2.1.
As for the Hisense U8G, U88G, U7G, and U78G, Freesync is a supported feature; however, it will disable Local Dimming. This is by design. Why? I'm unsure; however, I can only speculate that it is due to the added processing power required by the television. With that being said, if you enable Freesync, then your Local Dimming will not function. Now, if you do disable Freesync, it does not mean that you will have no VRR support. In fact, doing so will allow the TV to accept HDMI level VRR, which will also allow you to use Local Dimming.
