The Monkees were an American pop/rock band. Members: Micky Dolenz, (1945-) former members: Peter Tork, (1942-2019) Davy Jones, (1945-2012) and Michael Nesmith, (1942-2021). Michael Nesmith's death in 2021 led to the band's dissolution that year. The band was influenced by the Beatles, more specifically their film Hard Day's Night, and the two bands were good friends. Furthermore, both bands were named after animals (the Beatles are a cross between the words "beetles" and "beat", and the Monkees are a misspelling of the word "monkeys"). They were one of the most successful bands of the 1960s. With over seventy-five million records sold worldwide, the Monkees are one of the most popular bands in the world. In 1967, the group sold more records than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined.
