Vision relies on cells called neurons that send messages from the eyes to the brain. Diseases and injuries that harm those neurons can permanently damage our eyesight. Mohor Sengupta, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is studying a chemical called brorin that helps keep injured neurons alive. Learning more about this process might lead to a way to restore vision in people with damaged eyes.
