This time, I had the opportunity to closely follow the curry-making process on the destroyer "Akizuki," which was docked during the Self-Defense Forces Minato Festival in my hometown of Kagoshima.
The most popular menu item in the ship's kitchen, which supports nearly 100 crew members' appetites daily, is the traditional Maritime Self-Defense Force curry passed down from the navy days.
Due to safety concerns, the kitchen cannot use fire, so all cooking is done using steam. As a result, the equipment and tools are all specialized. Even with the limited facilities, various innovations were evident to ensure the food was delicious.
I also tried it, and the flavor was rich; it left such an impression on me that I thought, "I want to eat this again!"
While the recipe varies slightly from ship to ship, the "Akizuki" has even won past contests, and the crew members were happily eating it in large amounts.
Unfortunately, due to security reasons, we couldn't share the video, but it was a fun experience to see parts of the ship and weaponry that are typically off-limits.
A big thank you to the Self-Defense Force members who helped us!
