Q: What if my router doesn't have a "Port Forwarding" "Port Range Forwarding" "Virtual Server" "DMZ" or "Gaming" menu?
A: If your router was made in the past ten years or so then you definitely have the ability to port forward on your router/modem; it's just a matter of browsing all the menus until you find where you can port forward. Don't give up!
Q: After setting up my static IP address I get an error telling me there is a network IP problem, what gives?
A: When you setup a static IP address ONLY on your computer, like I showed in this video, then you are simply asking the DHCP server for a particular IP address. The problem arises when the DHCP server has already handed that address out to another computer or device on your network! To solve this you can do something in your router called "MAC address binding" or "DHCP reservation" which I didn't cover in my video because it was already so long! The other option is to turn off the device that took your static IP address and the DHCP will give it back to your server computer.
Q: How can I tell if my router/modem supports uPnP?
A: Try first by doing a google search for your particular brand and model and the words "uPnP" and "support". If that doesn't help, then try looking through every menu (including advanced menus) in your router and see if uPnP or automatic port forwarding is in there. Don't be afraid to just look.
Q: Can I just use Hamachi to let my friends connect to my server?
A: Absolutely! Hamachi is a client to server application vpn software. This will connect your friends to your network as if they were in your house! Once a Hamachi connection was established your friends would connect to your Local (private) IP address NOT your public IP. The downside is that everyone has to have Hamachi installed on their computer.
Q: Can I host my Terraria server on a Linux machine?
A: Yes, but there is very little documentation out there for it.
Q: If Terraria updates, do I have to update and restart my server too?
A: Yes.
Q: After editing the config file my server now crashes when I try to load it. What happened?
A: You probably have something typed in the wrong place. Double check that you haven't accidently left a , or " somewhere. If all else fails try restoring with your backup copy of the config file and try loading the server again.
Q: What is the difference between my Internal IP address and my External IP address?
A: The main differences are where they are located and separated. Your internal IP address is probably the same as thousands if not millions of people in the world. The reason is because your internal IP isn't considered routable on the internet, which means it never leaves your house, so who cares if we all use the same IP addresses at home? To communicate with other networks, however, your ISP gives you a dynamic (changing) IP address that is able to be routed on the internet and you can then communicate with the outside world. This is how people can find you at any given time online.
Q: Any way to setup a server without port forwarding?
A: The only way to host without manually port forwarding is to use the uPnP feature built into a compatible router. The other option is to use Hamachi.
Q: Can I connect to my Terraria server, using my public IP address, even though I am on the same network/computer as my server?
A: No, you need to use your local IP address.
