Hard Disk Recording
The DCR-SR42 records video in MPEG-2 format to a 30GB or 60GB hard disk.
A 30GB disk can record 7 hours of video, while a 60GB hard disk supports 14 hours.
Recorded video can be converted to DVD using one-touch DVD-burning software called Picture Motion Browser.
You can also do the same if the unit is connected to the Sony DVDirect.

The camcorder is compact and lightweight, weighing approximatedly 377 grams.
It also comes with a 2.5-inch LCD screen displaying images in the 4:3 aspect ratio.
Video Quality
The DCR-SR42 has a resolution of 680,000 pixels.
The effective video and still resolution is 340,000 pixels.
Optical zoom is at 40x and Digital Zoom is at 2000x.
Nightshot mode in the form of Super Nightshot Plus is supported.
Supported audio is Dolby Digital Stereo (2 channels.)
A USB 2.0 terminal and memory stick duo slot are also available.
Additional features include 10 scene program modes, a few digital effects and transitions, spot metering, and focus.
