Physically,a lattice phonon does not carry any momentum, but it interacts with other particles and fields as if it has a momentum, equal to the product of Reduced Planck’s constant and its wave vector. The physical significance of the phonon momentum is provided by the momentum conservation laws in crystals. There is no need of phonon momentum to deal with the problem of elastic scattering of x-rays by a crystal, but to deal with the problems of inelastic scattering of x-rays from a crystal,we must take into account either the creation or absorption of phonons for the validation of conservation laws of wave vector, momentum and energy.
