The direction of a line in a lattice is defined by assigning certain indices to this line. If the line passes through the origin, its indices are determined by taking a point on this line and finding out the projections of the vectors drawn from the origin to that point on the crystallographic axes. In this video this concept has been discussed in detail with proper examples in case of a cubic crystal. This concept is basically very important in dealing with the anisotropic properties of the crystals.
