Changsha (长沙), the capital and largest city of Hunan Province (湖南省) in China, is a city with a rich history spanning more than 2,400 years. Known as the "Star City" (星城), Changsha is situated in the lower reaches of the Xiang River (湘江) in northeastern Hunan. It is a significant urban center in central China, boasting a population of over 10 million people. The city is part of the Greater Changsha Metropolitan Region, which also includes Zhuzhou (株洲) and Xiangtan (湘潭), forming the Changzhutan City Cluster.
Changsha has been a site of major historical importance, with its name first appearing in ancient texts from the pre-Qin era. Throughout history, it has been a hub for cultural, educational, and political activity. The city is home to the Yuelu Academy (岳麓书院), one of the oldest learning institutions in China, which has evolved into today's Hunan University (湖南大学). Changsha's historical significance is further highlighted by its role in the production of the world's earliest underglaze porcelain during the Tang dynasty, and its status as a key city for trade in the late Qing dynasty.
In modern times, Changsha has emerged as a core city in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Belt and Road Initiative. It is recognized for its rapid economic development, especially in industries such as construction machinery, new materials, automobiles, and biomedicine. The city has also made significant contributions to science and technology, being the birthplace of super hybrid rice and the Tianhe-1 supercomputer, among other innovations.
Changsha's educational landscape is impressive, with 59 institutions of higher education, including four Double First-Class Universities. It is a major center for research and innovation, with a high level of scientific research output. Additionally, Changsha has been designated as the first "UNESCO City of Media Arts" in China, reflecting its vibrant cultural scene.
