Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, is a city along the Malabar Coast in the state of Kerala, India. It's known for its historical significance as a major trading point for Indian spices, earning it the nickname "City of Spices." The city has a rich history, dating back to antiquity and the medieval period when it was the capital of an independent kingdom ruled by the Samoothiris (Zamorins). Kozhikode played a pivotal role in the spice trade, acting as a gateway for the Chinese, Persians, Arabs, and Europeans, including the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama who landed here in 1498, opening a trade route between Europe and India.
The city's economy and culture thrived due to its strategic location, facilitating trade and cultural exchanges. It was once a famous cotton-weaving center, giving its name to the Calico cloth. Today, Kozhikode is recognized for its educational institutions, including the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), and its beautiful natural settings like the Kozhikode Beach and Kakkayam Valley. The city's official languages are Malayalam and English, reflecting its diverse cultural heritage. In 2023, Kozhikode was included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), highlighting its contributions to literature and culture.
