Typhoon Yagi Ravages Northern Vietnam, At Least 9 Dead, 78 Injured
Super Typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam, causing widespread devastation. The storm, touted as Asia's most powerful of 2024, claimed at least nine lives in Vietnam, with dozens more missing or injured. In coastal areas, over a dozen fishermen are unaccounted for, and over 50,000 residents were evacuated to safety. Yagi generated winds of up to 149 km/h, severely impacting the Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces. The heavy rains also triggered a landslide in HOA BINH province. The city of Hanoi saw significant damage, including power outages, collapsed structures, and disrupted transport. The government closed schools across 12 provinces, suspended operations at four airports, and urged people to stay indoors in northern Vietnam. Before hitting Vietnam, the storm also wreaked havoc in China where three people died and nearly 100 were injured. In the Philippines, the storm killed at least 20 people while 22 continue to remain missing.
