PLENTY OF WHITE CHINOOK!!!
If you are interested in having a float dropping experience, the Vedder River has plenty of opportunity for that! With the ongoing influx of White Chinook into the system, there is a good chance that you will encounter them throughout the system.
I find the most effective method for Chinook is float fishing ROE. Fresh cured roe seems to do the trick. When it comes to this pursuit, you need blinders on like a derby horse in a race. You'll see people throwing all sorts of stuff. Trust me, you can actually get true biting fish.
I was only using a short 17lb fluorocarbon leader about 20 inches long. Then, I set the float to weight distance about one foot or more off the bottom. Depending on the speed of the water, your hook and roe will drift a bit below your weight.
You are not dredging bottom... keep your presentation up where the fish will actively engage with it.
There is no need to attempt to floss these fish. They are willing biters.
Today, I arrived at a popular location at 3:30 pm to find I had it all to myself. It didn't take long before there were a few more guys... fishermen are schooling creatures, you know. Enjoyed the company and kept on fishing.
Not much was happening surface wise. Then, I started to see a few splashes. Indicating that there were fish below. I had a couple float down misses, and then I hooked up on a jack Chinook. These are Chinook less than 62 cm in length. You are allowed to keep them without writing on your license.
A few casts later, another good bobber down and great fight. At first, I thought it was an adult. Turns out another Chrome Jack.
Then a few more drifts through the zone and a beauty doe Chinook took my float down.
By 4:40 p.m., I had three on the beach and was feeling like a fourth would be no problem... well, I was wrong. I missed a few more float downs, and then it just shut off the last hour.
That's fishing.
Anyways, try the short leader thing. You might be surprised how well it works.
Best of luck out there!

Just like that the 2024 salmon run fishing season has commenced for me... one day out fishing on the ocean. The next day out in the rain fishing the river.
I thought a lot more fish would be making their way up with the rising tide and rainfall. Things were sort of slow, with not a whole lot of movement.
Roe from the Chinook I've been catching at Sand Heads was the ticket for my hookups. Landed a Jack Chinook, Adult Chinook, and a Hatchery Jack coho that I sent on its way up the river the first day.
Started around 2pm till the sun went down. Seals were chasing some fish in the lower river. Saw one with a shiny Jack coho. There is not much fish movement and not many bobber downs.
That's OK, still plenty of fishing ahead of us.
Good luck out there this year. Things are a little awkward with the rock removal going on. If you're willing to walk, there is still access to fishing, though.
