The UK based startup Octopus Energy Made $16 Billion by Paying its Customers to Use Less Electricity
Greg Jackson started Octopus Energy in 2015 in the UK. The company, provides its customers notifications though octopus energy app to reduce their energy consumption before peak times. The customers are paid to use electricity at times of high generation and low demand. Octopus Energy is a Virtual Power Plant as it does not make any electricity on their own, but they make money by saving energy. This happens by octopus energy smart meter and software platform called Kraken. Today, Octopus Energy is the largest electricity supplier of United Kingdom by domestic customer numbers with a 22% market share. Greg Jackson led Octopus Energy made $16 billion in revenue in the UK.
