Upgrading is pointless unless you care about the display. At this point the M-series iPad Airs and Pros can do anything you want it to do. They are overpowered tablets limited by iPad OS and always be. No matter what iPad you get, you always have fast encoding and processing for photo, video, and anything else you want to get done. The only reason I could see anyone upgrading with some sense is the need for a better display and refresh rate.
High refresh rates will force your hand in buying the iPad Pro models. From there, if you care about screen quality than with the models that are not M4 you would have to opt for the 12.9 inch iPads for their mini-led displays. Only with the M4 iPad Pros will you have access to the new Tandem OLED displays that have been heavily marketed by the new tablets.
At that point, is it really worth the extra dollars for a better OLED display? Is it worth it for thinner bezels and body. The newer models may come with more RAM, but is it really necessary when the older iPad Airs and Pros got the job done just as well with less RAM. The answer is always, it depends on your needs.
