The continuous burst mode isn't something I use frequently, but it can be incredibly useful when I do use it...
This mode lends itself particularly well to ocean photography, where capturing many different exposures can be beneficial. It's challenging to capture the perfect wave on the first try, so using this mode can produce five images back-to-back, increasing your chances of capturing the perfect wave.
And yes, you could use a shutter remote to do this. However, if you don't already own a shutter remote, purchasing one just for this use is silly. Also, if you're standing in the water when shooting, using a free hand for the remote is less than ideal when you want both hands on your tripod.
