The Special’s adaptive headlight, which adjusts the beam based on lean angle, while the hand guards, center stand, and skid plate enhance its adventure-ready appearance.
On-Road Performance
The Pan America Special shines on the road, with the Revolution Max engine delivering a very responsive ride. The additional weight over the base model is negligible when it comes to handling, as the Special’s semi-active suspension automatically adjusts to changing conditions, ensuring a smooth and controlled ride. The adaptive ride height (ARH) is a game-changer, lowering the seat height when the bike comes to a stop, making it easier to manage at slow speeds or when stopped—great for shorter riders.
With the various ride modes, you can tailor the bike’s performance to your preference, from a relaxed cruise to an aggressive canyon carve. The Special’s electronics package, including cornering ABS and traction control, enhances safety without feeling intrusive.
Off-Road Performance
Off the beaten path, the Pan America Special is a competent and confident machine. The semi-active suspension adapts to rough terrain, soaking up bumps and keeping the bike stable. The Off-Road and Off-Road Plus modes adjust the bike’s settings to optimize traction and control, allowing you to tackle everything from gravel roads to more challenging trails. The ARH system also proves useful off-road, automatically adjusting to provide more ground clearance when needed.
The Special’s extra features, like the factory-installed skid plate and brush guards, give it an edge when venturing into rougher terrain. However, like most adventure bikes, its weight can be a factor in more technical off-road sections, so it’s best suited to riders with some off-road experience.
If you’re in the market for an adventure bike that can do it all, the Pan America Special should be on your shortlist.
