To learn How an Email Server or SMTP server works. We must first learn about Email Protocols or SMTP Protocols. Otherwise, we won't be able to understand the email working process. SMTP Protocol conversation between two SMTP servers illustrates how email works step by step. The Email Protocols are used before and after email is sent and received by the SMTP Server.
I explained several tools and terminologies connected to Email and Email Servers in this video. I've explained the concept of Fetchmail, the Mail Retrieving Agent, and Procmail, the Local Delivery Agent with Scripting Support. Dovecot the POP/IMAP Server, POP or Post Office Protocol, IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol and the differences between POP and IMAP, and ultimately the email Mailbox format and the differences between Mbox and Maildir Format.
