Challenger относится к третьей серии послевоенных танков и состоит только на вооружении британских вооруженных сил. Первые этапы разработки были проведены исследовательским институтом MVEE совместно с компанией Vickers в 1972 году, после того как между Великобританией и Западной Германией было достигнуто соглашение о создании основного танка МВТ80/KPz-80 для использования в 1980-х годах.
The Challenger belongs to the third series of post-war tanks and is only in service with the British armed forces. The first stages of development were carried out by the MVEE research institute together with Vickers in 1972, after an agreement was reached between the UK and West Germany to create an MBT80 / KPz-80 main tank for use in the 1980s.
