In this video Rafi Shamim, an engineer from Cockroach Labs, demonstrates how to migrate schema. In the demonstration, he uses an open-source tool called FlywayDB but you could also follow the same steps with Liquidbase (the other popular schema migration tool).

It's not something that is typically addressed in any detail in school so it can be a little intimidating. But once you go through the process it all makes sense.
