This video is in response to the questions I have been receiving via video comments and DMs regarding the new HDMI Input Optimization setting within the Hisense U8G, U88G, U7G, and U78G after beta software M0414 and extending into the official release of M0422.
At first, I did not notice any perceivable differences between the Picture Quality Optimization or the Text Clarity Optimization; however, my initial tests were done on the Xbox Series X while gaming. I can only assume that gaming titles combat noticeable lower quality sub sampling in text and textures because there was no difference at all to my naked eye.
It wasn't until I tested things on a PC that I noticed a huge difference between the two settings, and thus this video was created.
Using windows in full 4K 120Hz in Chroma 4:4:4 or RGB at 100% Windows Scaling, we can see that Picture Quality Optimization results are severely degraded. Looking closer with a macro lens on my camera, you can even see entire pixels missing from the screen. Switching to Text Clarity Optimization mode in the HDMI Input Optimization setting, we can see everything regains full sharpness both up close and from afar, and the results are simply night and day. So, we'll just leave things in Text Clarity Optimization and call in a day then, right?
Well, not exactly... You see, when we place the HDMI Input Optimization setting to Text Clarity Optimization, we discover a significant bump in brightness and a noticeable drop in HDR. This is similar to the Dull HDR glitch users experiences when Hisense rolled out software M0210. So, what do we choose? Great contrast and HDR, or pixel sharp text with dull colors? Well, here are my thoughts.
At the end of the day, if you are using this TV as a multimedia piece, then choose Picture Quality Optimization. I'm unable to see any quality loss when gaming in 4K 120Hz, and everything else becomes a non-issue at 60Hz or lower for movies, tv, and general entertainment. For PC, this setting is downright unusable, meaning Text Clarity Optimization is honestly a must. As for the dull HDR in this setting, I'm sure it can be combated by calibrating the panel to your liking within Windows directly.
