Founded in 1947 by Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith as a die-casting company, Lesney Product & Co. found world-wide success with its Matchbox toys series.
Based in Hackney Wick, for many years Lesney provided secure employment to Hackney residents, and the factory itself became a landmark of the area.
In 1982, after years of difficulties induced by the economic climate in Britain at the time, Lesney was forced to shut down.
The historic building was demolished in 2010, and replaced with flat blocks.

In this film, Leslie Smith OBE remembers the origins, development, success and ultimate demise of the company, while former employees recall their experience working there.
Lesney had a reputation for being a good and reliable employer, providing a range of benefits to its employees, and for being a pleasant place to work. Its legacy lives on through the fond memories of its former employees, and the iconic Matchbox toys.
