Ces représentations d'Armida resteront certainement historiques en raison d'une distribution exceptionnelle (June Anderson, Rockwell Blake, Raúl Giménez etc). Mais la mise en scène a été très controversée surtout autour du chœur (femmes portant des barbes, homme habillées en femme etc.). A chaque apparition du chœur, le public se manifeste contre le directeur du festival (Louis Erlo) , le metteur en scène (Jean-Claude Fall) et parfois le chef d'orchestre. On entend des rires, des huées et des « Erlo à la retraite ! ».

These performances of Armida will remain in history because of an exceptional cast ((June Anderson, Rockwell Blake, Raúl Giménez etc.). However there were a lot of controversy against the staging especially around the chorus (women having bears and men dressed as women etc.). Every time the chorus showed up, the audience laughed, booed, shouted against the festival director (Louis Erlo), the stage director (Jean-Claude Fall) and sometimes the conductor. One can even hear "Erlo à la retraite!" (Erlo should retire!).
